Criteria for A Black Widow er andre plate ut i serien av remastrede Annihilator plater (den første var Carnival Diablos).
Platene kommer lekkert innpakket i en spesialdesignet slipcase og er stappet med bonusmateriale - både musikk og videoer.
Criteria for A Black Widow kom første gang i 1999 og var gjenforeningen av bandets originalbesetning inkludert vokalist Randy Rampage.
Blandt bonusmaterialet denne gangen finnes bandsjef Jeff Waters avsløring av den ''hemmelige'' gitarteknikken han benyttet under innspillingene av bandets Never Neverland.

Britiske Oceansize har alltid, med sine lange episke låter og komplekse arrangementer, vært en gåte for kritikere og radiostasjoner.
Bandet har uten tvil evnen til å skrive catchy og radiovennlige riff, men har konsistent valgt å ta sine kommersielle utgangspunkt til et mye mer ambisiøst nivå.

Akkurat dette er nok grunnen til at Oceansize i løpet av sin tre album lange karriere allerede har rukket å bygge seg en særdeles dedikert fanskare verden over. Bandet fikk en ''uventet'' økning av fans og oppmerksomhet på forrige album Frames - et album hvor de kastet alle kommersielle regler og formler over bord og presenterte et 100% kompromissløst album - 100% Oceansize. En trend som har vist seg å være suksessfull for mange artister de siste årene (Porcupine Tree, Mastodon, Opeth, The Mars Volta, Susanne Sundfør for å nevne noen).

Det som gjør som gjør ''Preserved...'' ekstra interessant er at brorparten av låtene klokker inn på 3 og 4 minutter i motsetning til normalen som ofte ligger mellom 8-10 minutter. Har Oceansize omsider har funnet sitt kompromiss mellom tilgjengelighet og ambisjon? Den musikalske spennvidden på ''Preserved...'' er stor, fra metalflørt med aner fra Meshuggah, Opeth og Porcupine Tree, til ambiente og lune låter som nikker mot Sigur Ros, Tortoise og ikke minst norske Jaga Jazzist.

Bandet har nettopp spilt support for Biffy Clyro, og står nå fremfor en rekke datoer som support for Porcupine Tree på deres Europaturne. Oceansize besøker Oslo og Garage 16. oktober.

Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna star in the 2009 Metropolitan Opera production of Puccini’s La Rondine (The Swallow). This new production, directed by Nicholas Joël, was the company’s first staging in 70 years.
This elegant romance is the least-known work of the mature Giacomo Puccini. The story concerns a kept woman who defies convention to chase a dream of romantic love with an earnest, if naïve, young man. This Met Opera production features the dynamic soprano Angela Gheorghiu and Frenchborn tenor Roberto Alagna performing the roles of Magda and Ruggero, it blooms into its rightful place in the glorious Puccini canon.

La Rondine (The Swallow) was commissioned by Vienna’s Carltheater in 1913. Due to the impending outbreak of World War I, premiered in 1917, at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo with Gilda Dalla Rizza and Tito Schipa. Set in a Parisian salon, it is the story of Magda, the glamorous mistress of wealthy banker Rambaldo. Her yearning for romantic love compels her into the arms of the ardent and adoring young Ruggero.

The 12 Cellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker, an orchestra within an orchestra, was formed in 1974 during the tenure of Herbert von Karajan. The ensemble counts as its godfathers Pablo Casals and Julius Klengel, a performance of whose Hymn for Twelve Cellos was their original raison d'être. In the intervening years, they have augmented their repertoire through commissions and arrangements in a wide variety of styles performed with guest artists on trumpet, clarinet, percussion, harp, double bass and more, drawn from different musical disciplines. Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker

Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker have recorded the most performed ballet of all time, Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker.
The release marks the conductor’s first Tchaikovsky recording and is one of several releases this season celebrating Rattle’s 30th anniversary on the EMI Classics label.

The Nutcracker story takes place around a Christmas Eve celebration in the Stahlbaums’ grand house with a beautiful tree surrounded by family and friends. Godfather Drosselmeyer, a clock and toy maker, arrives and presents dolls and gifts to all the children. He gives the Stahlbaums’ young daughter Clara a nutcracker that she adores. Her jealous brother, Fritz, grabs it and breaks it but Drosselmeyer deftly repairs it. The guests leave and the Stahlbaum family goes to bed but Clara, worried about her Nutcracker, steals downstairs to check up on him. At midnight, the tree seems to grow bigger. The toys come alive and the room is filled with an army of mice led by the Mouse King. The Nutcracker awakes and leads an army of toy soldiers in a fight with the mice. The mouse army is on the verge of winning when Clara hits the Mouse King on the head with her slipper, causing him to fall to the ground and his mouse army to scurry away. The Nutcracker turns into a prince and leads Clara to the Land of Snow where they are entertained by dancing snowflakes. In the Land of Sweets, the Sugar Plum Fairy treats them to a series of fantastic dances. Clara awakens to find herself by the Christmas tree in her own home. She is still hugging the Nutcracker.

Beethoven: Complete Sonatas For Violin And Piano

Renaud Capuçon and Frank Braley have devoted much of their 2009-10 concert schedule to Beethoven’s complete sonatas for violin and piano.
“These sonatas are full of memories for me,” says Capuçon. “The ‘Spring’ Sonata was the first piece of Beethoven I played, when I was ten years old. His music is a rite of passage for every violinist.”

This complete recording of Beethoven’s sonatas for violin and piano grows from a marathon performance project that Renaud Capuçon and Frank Braley launched in their native France in Summer 2009: some 50 concerts around Europe, all devoted to the Beethoven sonatas.

Renaud Capuçon’s Virgin Classics recording of the Beethoven Violin Concerto, released in 2009, prompted the BBC Music Magazine to state that he “approaches the Beethoven Concerto very much like the great virtuosos of the past through emphasising the work’s lyrical and expressive qualities”. He and Braley have frequently performed together as a duo and their previous recordings of chamber music for Virgin Classics embrace Schubert (the ‘Trout’ Quintet and the Trios opp 99 & 100) and Ravel (the Piano Trio and Violin Sonata).

The 2010-11 season sees Paavo Järvi take up his position as Music Director of the Orchestre de Paris. Marking the launch of this collaboration, Virgin Classics is releasing a programme of orchestral works by Bizet, the first recording from this leading French orchestra and its Estonian-born conductor.


With the 2010-11 season, Paavo Järvi assumes his new role as Music Director of the Orchestre de Paris, taking over from Christoph Eschenbach, who spent 10 years with the orchestra, and following in the footsteps of figures such as Charles Munch, Herbert von Karajan, Georg Solti and Daniel Barenboim.

To date, Järvi’s Virgin Classics recordings have focused on music by Nordic and Russian composers, and – in his recent work with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra – Mahler and Brahms. Now, with the Orchestre de Paris, he presents a programme by Bizet, a quintessentially French composer, who, as Järvi points out, receives insufficient recognition for his works beyond Carmen. The release comprises the vernal Symphony in C, written when Bizet was still a teenager, the delightful suite Jeux d’Enfants (Children’s Games) and the composer’s second symphony, Roma, a work he revised on a number of occasions, and which is rarely heard.
